Bpai Tiao: Beach Camping in Khao Sam Roi Yot

In Thailand, a bpai tiao is a trip of any length. I’ve written about some of my more significant bpai tiaos to tourist destinations here, to be used as travel ideas and tips.

As my time in Thailand winds down, I figured I’d get in one last bpai tiao. I was able to connect with some Peace Corps folks who had been evacuated from Liberia and Guinea because of the Ebola epidemic and we went to Khao Sam Roi Yot, a few hours south of Bangkok.

Bpai Tiao: Biking Along the Mekong in Mukdahan

In Thailand, a bpai tiao is a trip of any length. I’ve written about some of my more significant bpai tiaos to tourist destinations here, to be used as travel ideas and tips.

One thing that I have enjoyed while in Thailand is going to as many new places as I can. I enjoy seeing the variety that the country has to offer, from beaches to mountains, rivers to jungle not to mention the various cultural differences between the regions. I may not have the language skills to speak about things in depth, but I have gotten really good at casual conversations with new acquaintances as I have tried to talk to new people in all the places I have gone.

My most recent trip took me not only to deep Isaan, already a place most tourists don’t visit, but to a little visited province even by Thais, and through small villages that are well off the sightseeing path.

Bpai Tiao: Attending Lopburi’s Monkey Festival

Earlier this year, I posted about the different festivals in Thailand that I was looking forward to attending. After this weekend, I can gladly say that I made it to all five of the festivals I was excited about this year, which was topped off with a trip to Lopburi for the Monkey Festival.

The Monkey Festival is held annually on the last Sunday of November in the city of Lopburi, a province in central Thailand a couple hours north of Bangkok. The festival falls right around the same time as people in the States are celebrating Thanksgiving, which is convenient as the festival itself is a bit of its own kind of thanks giving feast.

In Thailand, a bpai tiao is a trip of any length. I’ve written about some of my more significant bpai tiaos to tourist destinations here, to be used as travel ideas and tips.

I love Thai festivals and I’ve made it a point to go to as many as I could this year, like the Rocket Festival, the Candle Festival and Phi Ta Khon. Recently, I made it to Lopburi to go to the annual Monkey Festival. There are Khmer ruins in the middle of Lopburi, and they have been overrun by macaques. Considering the macaques as agents of the Hindu god Hanuman, they are left alone. Each year, the city holds a festival for the macaques and provides them with a veritable feast. Check it out!

Bpai Tiao Video: AWC’s English Camp for Girls

There are some awesome organizations doing some great work in Thailand. Recently, I had the opportunity to partner with one of them, the American Women’s Club of Thailand. They hosted an English Camp for the recipients of the scholarships they provide. I had such a blast, and so did the girls. Check it out!

Bpai Tiao Video: Elephant Owner for a Day at Patara

In Thailand, a bpai tiao is a trip of any length. I’ve written about some of my more significant bpai tiaos to tourist destinations here, to be used as travel ideas and tips.

One thing that my parents were particularly interested in doing on their visit to Thailand was spending time with some elephants. There are a lot of disreputable elephant organizations in Thailand, that don’t properly care for the elephants. However, there are two organizations that I have found that I would whole-heartedly recommend.

Elephant Nature Park is a sanctuary for elephants that have been used and abused in the past. Patara Elephant Farm works to breed elephants with the ultimate goal of releasing them and combatting the declining population. We went with Patara, and included in their Elephant Owner for a Day program are photos and videos. Check out this video I made using the videos they took!

Bpai Tiao: Koh Ngai with My Parents

In Thailand, a bpai tiao is a trip of any length. I’ve written about some of my more significant bpai tiaos to tourist destinations here, to be used as travel ideas and tips.

Way back in 2012 when I found out I was coming to Thailand and I was making preparations like packing and stocking up on underwear and riap roy clothes, I also had a couple conversations with my dad mostly centered about the topic of travel.

Would I want to come back to the States to visit? (I originally said no, changed my mind once I got here and then changed it again, then got a trip back as a Blog It Home winner.) Would my parents come to visit me in Thailand? (Yes, but in 2014 because they were already planning on a cruise of the Mediterranean for 2013.)

I was a little skeptical that they would come, but earlier this month they touched down for their first time ever in Asia (on the same day that I got back from Bhutan! Told you it’s been a whirlwind) and we hit some highlights of Thailand. First stop: the beaches of Koh Ngai, one of the Trang Islands in the Andaman Sea.

Thailand is famous for its beaches and islands in the south. I personally haven’t had much time to spend down south until recently. One of the places I was really excited to see was the Emerald Cave, Tham Morakot, on Koh Muk. I thought you might want to check it out as well!

Bpai Tiao: a Thai-Style Trip to Koh Kut

In Thailand, a bpai tiao is a trip of any length. I’ve written about some of my more significant bpai tiaos to tourist destinations here, to be used as travel ideas and tips.

A couple months ago, my co-teacher asked me if I wanted to join her and some other teachers on a trip to Koh Kut, an island near Koh Mak along the Eastern seaboard and near Cambodia. Feeling like I hadn’t spent much time with her, and thinking that this would be a great opportunity for me to bond with some other teachers, I smiled and said, “Yes, that sounds like a lot of fun!” Flash forward to last week, and the day of the trip had arrived – it was time for a fully Thai-style bpai tiao.
